"Keep BBSing Alive"

On 19990209, The CEOs of West Coast Contact Inc and TheLitterBox Inc,
disgusted at the politics, backstabbing and lack of progress
of the old Council of Online Community Alternatives towards becoming
a legal entity, discussed their options.

As these two organizations owned, but had granted useage rights to the
morebund COCA, they were considering simply withdrawing the permissions
(to include the name), and how to best litigate, should it be neccessary.

During the discussion the two agreed that the real problem, and a major
problem for all such organizations, was the 'membership' and the fact that
some people simply have to play political games.

It was decided between the two that the best service we could give the
Online Communities was to create a 'library' or resource link for free
access and use.

Thus it was agreed that there would be no membership, but to be a
sponsored non-profit entity. So in a way, our work would not be destroyed
by petty politics or turf battles. This is the COCA you see today.

When presented to the membership, the new organization concept was voted
on and passed with unanimous vote. Members of the BBSA, ICON, IWA, and
AOP were amoung the voters.

On 19980211, the new organization was launched.

And to incourage contributions, it was agreed to have a contributors scroll.
