Complacency is the death of a website.
Every website reaches a point where you have to either switch things up or
witness a slow, steady decline. In the case of this particular website, a
small bit of upheaval socially brought it to my attention that I'd really
let things go.
Originally intended to be the cutting edge news of textfile-related issues,
I'd realized (quite accurately) that I was still building up the core
TEXTFILES.COM site and had no time to give the project what it deserved.
I had at that time befriended Mogel, who had done his share of e-zine-related
stuff and could both speak with authority and know who to contact. So,
SCENE.TEXTFILES.COM was born. With a little bit of news here and some
announcements there, plus a sprinking of links, it seemed to do the job.
Over time, things changed. Mogel left, put TheBMC in charge, and then TheBMC
left, and put Linear in charge. By the time I really looked back at the site,
it'd had several major changes done to it, and it didn't really do what I'd
hoped it'd do: archive and catalog the new files coming out. So besides the
nice warm feeling I had with other people sharing the load, and knowing
that there was some hand in the newer textfiles coming out, I realized the
site wasn't doing much more than any real link-bot could do. If those outside
sites went out, we were screwed, and there was absolutely no integration
with the rest of the TEXTFILES.COM site.
Finally realizing that the current admins and I had absolutely nothing in
common, I took back the site. What you see now is the result of a number of
hours of work, turning the site into a more integrated version of its original
goals and intentions, carrying over some of the previous content and opening
itself to more. Most of the site is script-driven and has a sort of techno
feel to it that doesn't really exist elsewhere in the TEXTFILES.COM family.
So this is the new chrome-laden look of this particular aspect of textfiles,
and that's just fine with me.
Submitting news and information will be much quicker now, and it will also
allow me to pull copies for archival purposes, meaning that the site is not
just an announcement list but a true collection.
I encourage you, the readers, to let me know what works and doesn't work for
you, by mailing me what you'd like
to see. Use the submission pages to let me know about other information and
what new things are out there, and in no time at all, we should have a pretty
involved, engaging site here.
Welcome to SCENE.TEXTFILES.COM.
