Has anyone tried this before?
Lets say your mud has a good backstory. You run some quest in which a
wizard attacks a town, enslaves a bunch of people, kidnapps soemone,
whatever. As long as some insane wizard is involved. During the middle of
the evil act the wizard casts a spell which goes awry and reverts the
world *back* to some very significant point in your mud's backstory. An
invasion or a princess kidnapping would be good because they sort of
things can change the world. From here on out the players would play the
game from that point in time. The players would actually get to rewrite
the history of your game.
Of course this would be a MAJOR pain in the butt for the mud developers,
but boy ol boy would it be cool.
Possible variation: You could take a 'Quantam Leap' style approach and
make the players complete some quest/event that occured in the
backstory. Hell you could base an entire mud around this concept. It would
take a lot of creative energy.
Wes!
