You also have to remember that lot of people already believe in some
kind of magic like gods, miracles, curses, horoscopes, shamanism,
lucky charms etc. Magic is very old concept after all.
And even that most fantasy magic systems are quite arbitrary they
usually have some kind of explanation behind them which is readily
accepted by average person. For example I don't any problems in
believing that magic is use of energy coming from collapsed portal
leading to warp - alternative universe composed of energy - as in
warhammer world. Now this doesn't mean that I think this could
really work, but it's good enough explonation for me to suspend
disbelief.
