Observation about Side Note: Your understanding of 'good' and 'evil'
is consistent with moral relativism, which is exactly what you
describe.  There is another understanding of 'good' and 'evil' which
is that of moral absolutism, where 'good' and 'evil' are defined by
absolutes that are unchanged by societal norms and values.  Which
morality Webster was referencing is anybody's guess.
