Whilst looking for somethign else on the IBM DeveloperWorks pages, I
came across the following links that may be interesting for anyone
who followed the recent discussion which touched on "suitable
languages for cross-platform MUD development".
Java Platform-dependent "gotchas": Brief summary of the different
reasons that Java is not 100% cross platform, with an example of
each. Tone of article: its not 100% perfect, but the problems are
not serious, and generally result either from sloppy coding, or
"open bugs" in a specific Java VM implementation (contains links
to where lists of open bugs etc can be found)

"Java vs C++" - despite being linked to from the front page of
java.sun.com, this article appears to have disappeared already (I'm
getting error messages that look like nicely-wrapped 404's). Anyway,
