I'll trump that with "gift giving", AKA creating mutual obligation.
I see 'shared struggle' as a subset; it is a way to create social
obligation.

  Marcel Mauss

     - Academic and old (1920). Requires concentration to read, but
     worth it.  If you don't have the time, read various summaries
     around the net.

  Order Without Law : How Neighbors Settle Disputes / Robert C. Ellickson.

     - Easy read. Discusses problems of Commons, and how people
     resolve them without law.  (contains a section on the
     Prisoner's Dilemma, and side-payments.)
