No, this isn't patented (at least, not by Carmack), and he would
shudder at the thought. Not to fawn over him, but part of John's
genius is that he generally does exactly as you state -- he
refactors the problem at a higher level and then addresses it
appropriately, instead of looking at implementations and seeing how
best they adapt to his problem. His work on graphics pretty has
pretty much followed that route, pursuing very non-traditional ways
of accomplishing amazing results.
