There's some self-fulfilling prophecy stuff going on here, though.
If you look at player feedback in games such as these (including
games that have tried to get out of the "d20 combat" mold such as
SWG), what are players usually cranky about?  Combat balance ("I got
nerfed!").  Not player-generated content, backstory, crafting
features, etc.

The only current mass market MMO that is really taking that bull by
the horns is Second Life, a game that is actively distasteful to
most d20-oriented players.
