Indeed. People seem to be happiest when they are being challenged
to the edge of their abilities. Too little challenge, and people
give up from boredom. Too much, and they give up in despair (or, in
the specific context of games and software, in disgust). Of course,
where that edge is depends on the person, the game, and can change
rapidly. If there's a single layer of play, people will simply
invent new ones once they've mastered the basics: how fast they can
run the course, doing something in minimum time or with minimum
resources, etc. This is part of the appeal of powergaming: once
you've figured out the mechanics, you treat the game itself as a
puzzle and start playing a metagame with it.
