I wonder if a game which had random drops of items, which could be
converted to real-world value within the company's definition of the
game (not simply converted by a third-party unauthorized transaction
on ebay etc.), would be required to respect existing legislation
governing "machine gaming", as in video poker and slot machines.
Even "income" based on allegedly pure player skill would be somewhat
open to question, due to the use of randomness so many places in
many MMOs -- commonly used for combat, spawning, etc.
This is not a legal opinion, just a layman's personal observation.
