I hate that phrase. It's missing the critical center element:
Oh, <game> tried that.
THIS IS WHAT THEY DID.
It didn't work.
The next element, of course, is "this is why it didn't work" --
hopefully followed by "here is how that problem can be
addressed". Too many people assume that just because an
implementation of the idea failed, the idea itself failed. Sometimes
all you need for an idea to work is an additional, potentially
unrelated, element.
