I recommend _Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach_ by Stuart Russell
and Peter Norvig. It is (C) 1995, so it is fairly recent. It was the
textbook for my CECS 375 AI class, and I liked it a lot. ISBN:
0-13-103805-2.

However, it is not really in the same class as the "for dummies" books. It
tells you what you need to know, but there is not a whole lot of
hand-holding. If you don't feel up on your AI, be prepared to start at the
beginning (like I had to) and work your way up to the fun stuff.

I plan on using the Partial Order Planner described in chapter 11, along
with the improvements in ch. 12, 13 and 14. It sounds a lot like what has
been discussed so far. Of course, it would help if I had a working MUD to
play with... Sigh. :)
