Another potential explanation is that males prefer to buy male
characters, but have both male and female characters to sell. You
could look at the statistics on how many male/female avatars were up
at auction vs the proportion of male to female player.  That would
also cause this phenomenon.  And it's not an unlikely scenario that
many males might be willing to sell their 'experimental' female
character a disproportionate percentage of the time.
