Good background on the research in the field.

One thing it leaves out:

Each individual has a speed of mental rotation, and in doing the
mental rotation tasks [is this 2d image of a 3d shape just a rotated
version of this other one?]. This is done by measuring the response
time, when the image is rotated at varying degrees, and plotting it
out. Half the point in a mental rotation task is the fact that you
only do the rotation in your head. It's a measure of cognitive
ability in terms of spatial ability and object processing. Doing it
by rotating the object in VR asks a different question, and thus
it's not surprising that the authors saw no differences between
genders in the VR version. It is quite interesting that
non-gender-differenced VR practice may have improved mental rotation
ability, as tested before vs after.

If anyone wants to discuss the findings and paradigm off-list, I'm
interested.
