NWN fills two fringe niches simultaneously. You can run a NWN (for
a lack of a better word) micromud. However, even if you take all of
the network stuff and rip it out by the roots, you still have a
easily modifable single player game. There hasn't been a successful
game in that niche since Adventure Construction Set. (Unless my
impression is wrong and you can do things worth doing in Dungeon
Siege. That game put me to sleep.)
The fact that it fills two fringe niches simultaneously means that
it will see a long and healthy future.
