I think it is the immediacy and anonimity of the environment in which we work.
Well, relative anonimity. With most of the other cases you outlined you
would have to go to quite a bit of effort to track down the person to complain
about their literay style. On a mud, it is easy. The admins often
publish their email address or you can post to one of the public
forums.
So I think the big reasons are access, immediacy and the relative
anonimity...
