This seems a bit extreme. It's analogous to the old "a debater should
be able to debate a topic that they don't believe in", which isn't
entirely true.
Some people role play specific characters or alter-egos. They invest
huge amounts of time creating and detailing their characters -- quite
possibly more time is spent on this than actually playing the
character! -- and the thought of permadeath isn't going to be
appealing with that amount of emotional investment.
