I have to admit, when I look at the figures for Lineage, and then look
at the actual game, my reaction is somewhat like what I had to
learning Jerry Lewis was big in France: "Furrinners are wierd."
Lineage's production values are so marginal, and it's design
principles so apparently pedestrian, I can't make heads or tails of
its success. I'm left with only two theories:
1) Somewhere in the parts of the game that make absolutely no sense
to me, there are hidden depths that are immediately immersive to a
native Korean. Likely, simply because of my inability to speak
Korean and therefore participate in the community, the key parts of
the game are closed to me.
2) The country where Starcraft is a televised sport is just plain
too different for an outsider to understand, in ways that make it a
particularly fertile market. Maybe Korea is destined to dominate
the MMOG industry, and I'll be as relevant as an american Anime
artist.
Either way, it just isn't of any use to me in trying to extract useful
design principles.
