This type of output always takes me back to the old BBS door game
Operation Overkill II. Excellent door game back in the mid-90s.

The map idea is good, have you considered building a custom client
for the game? Is there really any reason that you need to limit the
output to a telnet session and ascii?

This type of thing could be done by a pretty simple program that
displayed a graphical map, used a text window, and an single line
entry.
