Shangri-la is the biggest MUSH I'm aware of and still comes nowhere
near the biggest non-MUSH MUDs, such as Gemstone IV and
Dragonrealms. I suspect you're also checking at weird offhours since
those are very low numbers for all three games. Further, Shangri-la
permits excessive idling which really distorts the figures as many
of the players are not really 'there'. For instance, right now
there are 327 people on Shangri-la. The average player online has
been idle (ie not entering a command) for just under 26
minutes. Most of the large text MUDs do not, I believe, permit such
excessive idling. For instance, at the moment in Achaea there are
347 people on. The longest anyone has been idle is 21 minutes (as
compared to 5 hours+ on Shangri-la).

I'd suggest that if you're interested in measuring activity, take
into account idle times. Either way though, the premise still
stands: MUSHs are simply not as popular and never have been.

Hey, that's not cheating. They're just appealing to a possibly
underserved niche within a niche. Good for them.

Nod. MUSHs just don't reach the same size non-MUSH MUDs
do. Shangrila is an outlying exception and still doesn't compete
with the largest text muds in terms of player activity.
