Don't have a lot to add to this post, except on this one point.
Reputation falls into the category of being less of a sliding scale of
ability and more just a defining feature for your character, which can
be either bad or good, depending on how you look at it.  This, IMO, is
much better than things like conventional stats which are basically 'more
is better'.
For example, being a known cutpurse in town is bad if you want to join
the Order of Holy Balance, but good if you want to join the Thieves' Guild.
And perhaps being known at *all* is bad if you're a conman trying to make
a living by swindling people - once your name gets known it's time to
move to a new town.  On the other hand, if you're running for mayor, you
want all the publicity you can get.
