You can find source for micro-emacs (not GNU) that has a GNU-like interface
and maintains most aspects of Emacs file formats on orion.oac.uci.edu.
It doesn't take anywhere near the amount of memory that GNUEmacs takes.
(Though real GNUEmacs users generally shit on it.)
