It provides something relatively concrete after death (as opposed to nothingness which is a concept i'm still working on after 21 years of trying to figure it out every night while i fall asleep), and it provides guidelines to help one make decisions throughout their lives. Also, a lot of people have a great deal of trouble with the idea that all the events in the world are random (not that i'm saying they are). It can be much more comforting to believe that everything happens for a reason. -peter
