He didn't see the devastation that was coming on the church. Before constantine the church was visible and the working of God in the world (Providence) was invisible. After Constantine theologians reversed it and Augustine said the real church was invisible (because those who were not saved were in the church) and People like Eusebius thought that what they saw Constantine do must be the providence of God, thus providence became visible. The whole concept of the church was switched around. sounding the alarm
